To say that the DREAM Act is based on such a simple and seemingly supportable premise is simply dishonest. In fact the DREAM Act would primarily mean sending immigrants who seek college help directly into the U.S. military! And yet the SFSU occupation is criticized for linking an anti-war demand with its education-specific demands!

Hi Angus,

Thank you for the post and I like how you connect the two stories of both Andrea and I. Here in Chicago we have created a youth-led movement that fights for youth immigrant rights and most recently our focus was my case. Like Reyna previously mentioned, the group’s name is Immigrant Youth Justice (IYJL). It was created grassroots and independently of any other group, but we are working together with DreamActivist and the various orgs fighting to stop our youth from being deported and allowed to have a path to citizenship.

I didn’t actually claim that DREAM Activist was involved in the campaign on behalf of Padilla from the start — I don’t know anything about that history. (I do, though, see a post in support of Padilla at the DREAM Activist website that dates from March of this year.)

At any rate, my intention wasn’t to discuss DREAM Activist’s involvement in the Padilla case, and I’ve edited the story very slightly to make that clear.

I’d just like to point out that DreamActivist did not support Rigo at the beginning. All the work done was grassroots organizing done by people in Chicago. Most especifically the mobilizing of students around campuses in Chicago was done by a new group called Immigrant Youth Justice League (IYJL).
