There is little question that the interim VP had the express support of the senior administration, up to and including the Office of the Chancellor, when she threatened to dismantle the English Department. The President’s ‘Good Cop’ statement that ‘Bad Cop’ VP Steele was articulating a “worst case scenario” leaves open the possibility that if the faculty do not capitulate, the threat of termination will be carried out. The administration understands that English professors are masters of charitable interpretation, and will use their earnest open-mindedness against them. The faculty will be given a contained forum in which to voice and dissipate its deeply considered and meticulously researched concerns. And then the administration will reduce the class hours of the courses that account for 75% of English Department enrollment, compensation will be reduced, adjunct positions and some full-time lines will be eliminated, and many at-risk students will drop out.
