On Friday April 23rd, 2010 I officially became the President-elect of University of Wisconsin-River Falls Student Association Student Senate. Since April 9th an ethics complaint (about me allegedly campaigning before the elections period which is an elections rule violation) was issued against me that had the potential to get me thrown off the ballot, I ended up winning this complaint but the Current Student Senate president (who was the one who filed the complaint against me) decided to appeal the ethics committees decision to the Student Senate and the decision was overturned by a vote 10-4. So, although I am currently set to take office as the 73rd Student Senate president at UWRF and the first African American UWRF Student Senate President in recent memory, I face a chance of having my title ripped from me the same day I’m suppose to claim it.
The charges against me have been refuted and dis-proven several times, the ethics committee has already sided with me and there is a huge possibility that the main reason this complaint is still in play is due to the fact that many senators who voted yes to the appeal were connected to either the people who filed the complaint or to the 3 other candidates who were running for president against me.
This situation has stirred up a lot of drama here at UWRF and there is set to be a HUGE show down on the Student Senate floor at the last meeting of the session, Tuesday April 27th at 7pm.
Pretty much this whole thing will be very newsworthy and could set a precedent for my campus and possibly others, because I’m very positive other student senates have taken their power and gone out of control causing a backlash from the campus.
We plan to have campus media there and and film most of it so except more news next week!
